In Japan, 10 spring qualities have been certified as "therapeutic springs." Of the 10, Arima Onsen's "Kinsen" contains seven of the Arima Onsen qualities: simple springs, carbon dioxide springs, bicarbonate springs, chloride springs, sulfate springs, ferrous springs, and radioactive springs. It is said to be extremely rare even around the world. It is a hot spring that even appears in the Nihon Shoki. You can enjoy Kinsen at five-star inns such as Arima Grand Hotel and its sister hotels Nakanobo Zuien , Hyoe Koyokaku , and Kinzan .
Jigokudani hot springs and the moor hot springs born from ancient plants
Dai-ichi Takimotokan in Noboribetsu Onsen , Hokkaido is a representative five-star inn where you can enjoy hot springs of various qualities all at once. With 35 baths covering 1,500 tsubo (5,000 m2) for both men and women, you can enjoy five different spring qualities: sulfur springs, Glauber's salt springs (sulfate springs), salt springs (chloride springs), baking soda springs (bicarbonate springs), and acidic green iron springs (iron-containing springs). In Noboribetsu Onsen, which draws its hot spring water from Jigokudani, Takinoya is known as an inn where you can enjoy four different spring qualities: salt springs, iron springs (iron-containing springs), radium springs (radioactive springs), and sulfur springs, while Noboribetsu Grand Hotel Hotel offers three different spring qualities: sulfur springs, salt springs, and iron springs. Many inns in Hokkaido offer iron springs.
A hot spring unique to this region is the "Moor Onsen" of Tokachigawa Onsen in Hokkaido. This hot spring bubbles up through a layer of lignite, which was formed over a long period of time by the accumulation of reeds and other plants that grew wild in ancient times. The water is a clear brown in color and is alkaline, containing humic substances derived from peat (lignite). It is also popular as a beauty bath. You can enjoy this hot spring at the five-star Tokachigawa Onsen Daiichi Hotel and its sister hotels Sanyokan and Kangetsuen .
Murasugi Onsen, whose radioactive springs are a national treasure, and Tomonoura Onsen in Japan
Radioactive springs are also called radium springs or radon springs. You can enjoy their benefits at Fuga no Yado Choseikan in Murasugi Onsen, Niigata Prefecture. Murasugi Onsen contained in the soil on the premises break down and dissolve into the hot spring water and air, becoming radon. Choseikan's water has the highest radon content in Japan. Moreover, radon and trace amounts of radiation have a high "hormesis effect," which activates the body's natural healing power. You can enjoy the benefits of radioactive springs just by soaking, drinking, and inhaling. Another five-star inn where you can enjoy radioactive springs is Tomonoura Onsen in Hiroshima Prefecture. At Ofu-tei in Tomonoura Onsen, you can enjoy Japan's top-level radioactive springs in a variety of baths.
The 10 "therapeutic springs" defined by the Hot Springs Law are summarized below. We hope you will enjoy your trip to the spring quality of your choice while understanding the effects of each.
