Myojinkan is one of only 11 Relais & Chateaux member hotels in Japan. It has developed from a small family-run Myojinkan that only served food from the mountains and fields to a world-renowned wellness and Japanese resort. It is the only hotel in the Yatsugatake-Chūshin-Kōgen Quasi-National Park, and is one of only four hotels in Japan to have received the eco-label "Green Key" for its environmentally friendly accommodation, which is committed to locally produced food and uses organic vegetables grown on its own farm, and for its facilities that use organic ingredients. The hotel expanded its fields on unfortunate land with the sole desire to provide hospitality to its guests, and its history of valuing everything, not just food and hot springs, still lives on in the 93rd year since its founding.
At Myojinkan, you can enjoy unique cuisine based on the spirit of macrobiotics (the earth is one with the body) supervised by Executive Chef Tanabe Masahiro. Popular dishes include those that allow you to enjoy the powerful flavor of the vegetables themselves and Japanese cuisine that is imbued with Matsumoto's food culture. The dishes brought to your table are visually stunning, made with vegetables harvested at Tobira Farm, where the staff themselves planted the rice and worked in the fields, and the bounty of nature that sprouts in season. They are imbued with the energy of life bestowed by the water, soil, and sun. The food presentations at Nature French Sai and Shinshu Dining TOBIRA, which blend in with the nature of Tobira Onsen, continue to fascinate Myojinkan fans.
Surrounded by large beech and oak trees, Myojinkan blends into the surroundings of the untouched forest where squirrels live and the source of the Usui River where trout live. There are 10 types of extraordinary guest rooms, offering a tranquil time amidst the abundant nature. For example, Zen SPA Living is a room designed to evoke the mountain stream that runs alongside Myojinkan and the mossy stream and natural forest upstream. The bathtub in the center of the living room is filled with hot spring water that seems to overflow from the sky, making for a meditative bath. From the comfortable Sealy bed, you can gaze out at the forest as it changes with the seasons. Pretty wild birds also visit the terrace. There are no televisions inside the rooms. It is not what you would call luxury, but nature luxury.
Be sure to take a nature walk in the evening or morning. There is a walking path along the Usui River, with benches and gazebos. You might even meet some cute squirrels.
What makes your stay special is the standing baths that reflect the colors of the seasons on the surface of the water, the rustic open-air baths, the open terrace that blends into the mountain stream of Wasabi-Zawa, the salon where you can enjoy sweets and delicious alcoholic beverages, the lobby where music plays, the walking paths, and more. If you throw yourself into it as you are, the natural surroundings will give you back your energy. In the peaceful forest, a resort menu essential for modern people shines.
