Oomaki Onsen Kanko Ryokan is the only inn on the banks of the Shogawa River. Before arriving at the pier, the captain turns the boat around so that we can see the whole building.

The Shogawa Narrows in southern Toyama Prefecture are a gorge about 20km long. To get to Oomaki Onsen Kanko Ryokan, board a Shogawa sightseeing boat from Komaki Dam and travel up the river that meanders through the gorge. You'll be greeted by the dazzling emerald green clear water and the magnificent views on both banks. In winter, you'll be captivated by the snowy scenery that resembles a sumi-e painting. If you're lucky, you might even spot a Japanese serow. This is truly a hidden gem. After enjoying the cruise for 30 minutes, you'll see a lone inn clinging to the cliff.

Many hot spring villages that once stood in the gorge were submerged at the bottom of the lake when Komaki Dam was completed, leaving this inn stranded between the dam lake and the steep cliffs. However, in an attempt to somehow preserve the hot springs that were loved by many villagers, the inn was revived by drawing hot spring water from the bottom of the lake and using boats as the only means of transportation. It is said that the hot springs were discovered by a Heike warlord who was fleeing after losing a battle during the Genpei period, about 800 years ago. Step off at the boat dock and climb the stairs to reach the entrance to the inn.

Upon arrival, you will be greeted by a warm space with a hearth. Most of the guest rooms, including Japanese-style rooms, Japanese-Western style rooms, and open-air baths with natural hot spring water, face the Shogawa River, so you can enjoy the view of the gorge, woven by the nature of the four seasons. If you open the window, the breeze will come and the gorge will reverberate. It is also fun to cast your fishing line from your room all day long.

Enjoy the open-air bath and natural hot springs while taking in the stunning views of the gorge, as well as kaiseki cuisine made with local ingredients and seafood from Toyama Bay.

The large public bath by the lake is accessible from the rooms via a tatami mat. You can immerse yourself in the natural hot springs with a long history in the open-air bath and the rock-bottom bath, which overlook the magnificent view of the flowing Shogawa River and the gorge. The spring water is 58 degrees, so water is added only when the bath is filled, but otherwise it is free-flowing from the source.

Large public baths for men and women are located on the banks of the river. You can relax and unwind while gazing at the steep cliffs and water surface through the wide glass windows.

The meal includes a banquet of cuisine with plenty of locally grown produce and fresh seafood from Toyama Bay. Breakfast is a Japanese set meal with freshly cooked Koshihikari rice from Toyama Prefecture. It's surprisingly appetizing. Nearby sightseeing includes the Ainokura Gassho-zukuri Village and Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village, both World Heritage sites. This is a special place that can only be reached by boat. Beyond time and space, great healing awaits.
