Located in Kawaramachi on the banks of the pure Nagara River, Juhachiro has been in business for over 160 years since its founding in 1868, towards the end of the Edo period. On the wall of the lobby is an inscription from the "Juhachiro" poem by the haiku poet Basho, from which the inn's name is derived. On the premises is a stone monument bearing a haiku by Basho, erected at the end of the Edo period. Both monuments are engraved with the beautiful scenery around the Nagara River, which continues to soothe people even after the passage of time. The elegance and calm that can be felt throughout the inn is the flavor that can only be found at a long-established inn. During the cormorant fishing season, from early May to mid-October, the inn is the only one in the area with a private passage to the pier, and is enveloped in a particularly lively and emotional atmosphere.
The baths also have views of the Nagara River. Built in the style of a traditional townhouse, "Kawa no Oto" is an elegant Japanese-style bath with a Kiso stone open-air bath overlooking the Nagara River, a jet bath, a herbal bath, and a silky bath. The spa resort-style open-air bath, "Kawanose," allows you to bathe while being blown by the river breeze. The night atmosphere illuminated by the underwater lighting is also fantastic. There is also a herbal bath and a silky bath with microscopic bubbles, which will leave you feeling especially refreshed.
The "Kuranoyu" bath, which is connected to the river rapids, evokes a sense of nostalgia. The bath is a modern and stately bath housed in a Meiji-era lumber merchant's storehouse, and the murky brown water flows into the bath. The high-quality iron and radon content will soothe your travel fatigue.
Enjoy modern rooms overlooking the Nagara River, radon springs, and Japanese kaiseki cuisine prepared by a master chef
A guest room with a view of the Nagara River. The special Japanese-Western room "Minato" with an open-air bath is definitely one to stay in. It is a modern space with a 12-tatami living room and bedroom. The wide windows fill the room with the view of the Nagara River. The relaxing time spent relaxing in the hot springs and the flowing clear water is something you won't find anywhere else. We also recommend the river-side Japanese-style room with an open-air bath and the Japanese modern twin room.
The chef, who is a certified Japanese cuisine specialist, culinary technician, and international herbal medicine and nutrition educator, prepares a luxurious Japanese banquet using carefully selected ingredients such as the underground waters of the Nagara River and local vegetables. The Hida beef dishes, prepared with the skill and pride of the chef, are exquisite. After dinner at Juhachiro, you can enjoy the Gifu Nagara River Cormorant Fishing on a sightseeing boat, featuring cormorant fishermen from the Imperial Household Agency and cormorants. This traditional event has been held without fail for over 1,300 years. The bonfires swaying on the river's surface are a sight that even Nobunaga and Basho were fascinated by.
The chef's special monthly Kaiseki dinner is made with fresh ingredients procured from the local market every morning and features wholesome dishes arranged in a unique way.
"Hida beef hotpot" was invented by the head chef. Juhachiro is recognized as a "designated Hida beef restaurant" by the Hida Beef Brand Promotion Council.
