Located almost halfway between Atami Station and Atami Port, Furuya Ryokan is a long-established Japanese-style inn founded in 1806, close to the downtown area. Its popularity is due to its "Kiyozaemon no Yu" (Seizaemon's Hot Spring). It is one of the seven historic hot springs in Atami, and the inn has exclusive use of the hot spring source, which it has carefully protected for 200 years. All the baths in the building are filled with 100% natural hot spring water, drawn directly from the source and without any heating or water addition. The piping is independent, so it can be said to be a completely free-flowing system. In January 2024, "Kiyozaemon no Yu" was certified as a "Barrier Oasis Hot Spring" by Pola Orbis Holdings Co., Ltd., which scientifically analyzes and certifies the skin-beautifying effects of hot springs. It is a source of skin-beautifying water that has been analyzed to have the effect of moderately adjusting the peeling of keratinocytes and increasing moisturizing power when soaking in the water. It is a very nice thing to be able to enjoy it at the source. I would especially recommend this to people who are concerned about rough skin.

Furuya Ryokan large public bath, men's bath

The large men's bath is made entirely of cypress. The changing rooms at the inn are disinfected 24 hours a day.

Furuya Ryokan women's open-air bath

The stone open-air bath for women. The inn has installed an AI sensor congestion avoidance system called "Konanaisan." You can enjoy the hot spring water while avoiding crowds.

There are eight different types of guest rooms. Because it is located in the city, there are no sea views, but all of them are over 12.5 tatami mats in size and are spacious enough to step into. The most popular room is the "Main Building Japanese-style Room 15 tatami mats + 10 tatami mats type." It is the largest room at the inn, and the open-air bath is spacious enough for two adults to use. Since it is not adjacent to other rooms, you can enjoy a quiet and private time. The three types that were revamped in the two-year renovation starting in 2021 are the "Annex 12.5 tatami mats," "Main Building 12.5 tatami mats," and "Main Building 13.5 tatami mats." The blinds of the indoor open-air bath can be adjusted to any angle or opened and closed with the push of a button, making it an all-weather type, so you can enjoy a bath without worrying about wind, rain, or cold. Of course, it also serves as a privacy measure.
In order to continue protecting the authentic hot springs, the inn does not increase the number of baths unnecessarily. Instead, the large public bath and open-air bath are drained and cleaned every day, ensuring that guests can always enjoy fresh, newly-born hot springs. Atami's hot springs were once presented to the Tokugawa Shogunate. The indoor baths for both men and women are made entirely of cypress, while the open-air baths are made of stone, allowing guests to stretch out in comfort. The hot springs are not heated or diluted, so you'll feel a unique warmth after bathing.

Furuya Ryokan Indoor Open-air Bath

The 12.5 Tatami room with an open-air hot spring bath in the annex was renovated and reopened in July 2021. This is a new type of room with an all-weather "indoor open-air bath" developed by Furuya Ryokan.

Furuya Ryokan

The most popular room is the one with an open-air hot spring bath (15 tatami mat + 10 tatami mat Japanese-style room in the main building). Even though it is in the city center, the purely Japanese-style space is quiet and you won't feel any surrounding noise.

The main building has a 12.5 tatami mat indoor open-air bath made from cypress wood with a hot spring source.

Furuya Ryokan Takeda Shingen Yakatamon

The symbol of Furuya Ryokan is the Takeda Shingen Yakatamon Gate, which was used in the film "Kagemusha" directed by Akira Kurosawa. Inside the building, you can see various exhibits that recall the history of the inn.

The pleasure is enjoying the Kyoto-style "Furuya Kaiseki" in your room, which is unique to this long-established inn. The inn serves original kaiseki that matches the times, not authentic kaiseki or creative cuisine, but rather seasonal dishes that are carefully and skillfully prepared, each dish has a delicate and elegant taste. The seafood is also extremely fresh. The basic course consists of 13 dishes. If you are a little greedy, why not add the "local fish platter" which is an upgraded version of sashimi, or the "boiled golden-eyed snapper" from the waters off Izu? The breakfast is a Japanese breakfast with a gentle taste centered on Atami's unique ingredients, such as fresh sashimi, steaming dried fish, and elegantly seasoned stews. Rice porridge is also available. Instead of white rice, you can also order the Furuya-style "Izu wasabi bowl" made with Izu real wasabi grown in clear streams, the highest quality bonito flakes, and special soy sauce.

Furuya Ryokan Breakfast

Try this instead of white rice for breakfast: the "Suruga Bay Blessings Mini Two-Color Bowl" with boiled whitebait and sakura shrimp.

Furuya Furuya Ryokan "Furuya Kaiseki"

One example is the Kyoto-style "Furuya Kaiseki," which emphasizes the selection of ingredients and the overall balance of the meal. It is a course of 13 dishes in total. All the tableware is sourced directly from Kyoto.

If you want to relax in the building, be sure to check out "Showo Yomu Tabibito," which opened in April 2022 as a second lobby. The aroma-filled space, with soothing background music, is equipped with a counter, sofas, chairs and tables, free drinks, best-selling books, and more, which can be used however you like. You can also order a glamorous and stylish time enjoying the traditional Japanese art of "geisha entertainment."
