A-class gourmet food, stargazing... A trip to Minami Sanriku is a continuous series of surprises and impressions.
Hotel Kanyo is a 10-story white resort that stands on the cliffs of a ria coast, embracing the Pacific Ocean. The ocean view from the lobby window will impress anyone who visits. From the ocean view rooms, you can see the vast ocean unobstructed, and you can see the dramatic view that changes from morning to night. Seagulls and black-headed gulls fly over the sea, and if you open the window of your room, you will see black-tailed gulls.
The most popular attraction is the "Infinity Onsen" which offers a spectacular view of these waters. The baths are filled with deep natural hot spring water from the Pacific Ocean, a rare source in Miyagi Prefecture, and while bathing in the open-air bath jutting out into the sea, you can make eye contact with the ocean. There are also large baths on the second floor of the East Building and the fourth floor of the South Building where you can see the ocean through large glass windows, giving the feeling that the water and the sea are one.
Seagulls welcome you through the wide windows of your guest room.
Shizugawa Bay below is dotted with oyster, sea squirt, and wakame seaweed farms, as well as small fishing ports where a wealth of seafood is landed. The Minamisanriku Kirakira Donburi, which was launched in 2009 by the hotel's female owner as a way to revitalize the town through food, is also a gift from this bountiful sea. It has become a famous A-class gourmet dish of Minamisanriku.
Abe Cho Shoten, which operates the hotel, ships the abundant fish caught off the coast of Sanriku and processed products all over the country, and is working to popularize the fine cuisine of Sanriku. The dishes made with the best seafood of the season, such as grilled abalone and whole simmered shark fin from Kesennuma, are truly exquisite. No matter when you visit, you can enjoy delicious seafood cuisine.
One example is "Braised Shark Fin," which received three stars in the Miyagi edition of the Michelin Guide.
"Minamisanriku Kirakira Ikura Donburi and Odoriyaki Abalone Gozen" (one example). The "Minamisanriku Kirakira Ikura Donburi," which incorporates fresh local ingredients such as abalone, sea urchin, and salmon roe that change with the seasons, won the Special Jury Award at the Food Action Nippon Awards 2014.
Preserving the memory of the disaster for the future
The memory of the Great East Japan Earthquake must not be forgotten. The Takano Kaikan, owned by the hotel, and the Spiral Staircase of Life at the home of the founder of Abe Naga Shoten remain in their damaged state as "silent storytellers," and both are registered as earthquake memorial facilities. The hotel operates a "Storyteller Bus to Keep the Disaster Alive," which can be applied for by one person, every day, and continues to provide a place to learn about disaster prevention and mitigation while guiding visitors around these earthquake relics.
"Storytelling bus to ensure memories of the disaster are not forgotten." Staff members act as guides, showing people around the town.
A total of 460,000 people have ridden the train so far. In recognition of these activities, the hotel was awarded the "3rd Japan Tourism Award." There are no other private companies that have steadily continued to hold such activities and "Storytelling Symposiums." With the memory of the Noto Peninsula earthquake on New Year's Day 2024 still fresh, we hope that the hotel's message will reach areas that have not yet been affected by the disaster.
The Shizugawa Bay Sightseeing Boat operates from Shizugawa Fishing Port, cruising the bay right in front of you. The bay, registered under the Ramsar Convention, is known for its serene coastline, the fish farming platforms that spread across the fertile sea, and the scenic beauty of Arashima Island, Nojima Island, and Tsubakijima Island, a national natural monument. There are also many wild birds, and black-tailed gulls often come within reach.
Cruise on a sightseeing boat around Shizugawa Bay, a different world where many different wild birds live.
The Minami Sanriku area is also a great place for stargazing. It was endorsed by the Ministry of the Environment's "Night Sky Brightness Survey" and was selected by Rurubu Travel as one of the "Top 10 Hotels with Beautiful Starry Skies." The hotel opens its rooftop to the public twice a month and has hosted over 100 "Star Parties." This astronomy event has a miraculously high rate of clear skies. Three star sommeliers explain the world of stars, constellations, galaxies and nebulae, and you'll be captivated by their entertaining explanations. If you want to know the latest information about the hotel, including event information, why not check out the hotel's official blog or various social media accounts? Apparently, the official blog has already been posted to over 6,000 times.
On the way back, a free "sightseeing shuttle bus" operates Monday through Friday for guests. It takes you to the "Tsuyama Mokumoku Land Roadside Station" and "Yanaizu Kokuzoson," which have craft shops and vegetable stands, and allows you to make extra memories. This hotel is filled with many moving experiences that you can never experience anywhere else. It is sure to be a trip that will be deeply etched in your memory.
