Beppu Hell Tour: Popular for its "Eating Hot Springs"

Beppu Hachiyu is a popular hot spring resort in Kyushu that was ranked 4th in the 2024 "Top 100 Hot Springs in Japan"

Beppu Hachiyu in Oita Prefecture is a popular hot spring resort in Kyushu, ranked 4th in the 2024 "Top 100 Hot Springs in Japan" list, voted for by travel agency staff and others. Boasting one of the largest numbers of hot springs and the largest volume of water output in Japan, it is home to eight hot springs: Beppu, Hamawaki, Kamegawa, Kannawa, Kankaiji, Hotta, Shibaseki, and Myoban. With a wide variety of hot springs to enjoy, each with its own unique quality and atmosphere, the area has a history of soothing visitors, with some of the oldest hot springs dating back to the early 8th century.

Sea Hell

The Beppu Hachiyu are famous for the Beppu Hell Tour, which takes you around historical tourist spots. Among them, Sea Hell, Blood Pond Hell, Tornado Hell, and White Pond Hell are all registered as nationally designated scenic spots.

The steamed cuisine of Kannawa Onsen is one of the delicious dishes you'll want to enjoy after touring the hot springs and hells.

You can tour all of Beppu's Hells in about two and a half hours. After a morning of walking around, we recommend eating "Jigoku Mushi," a specialty of Kannawa Onsen that is steamed with fumarole. Beppu City introduces this Jigoku Mushi dish as "edible hot springs," and it has become a popular gourmet staple due to its impact and healthiness.

The ingredients used include seafood, meat, and vegetables. The steaming method is very simple: place the ingredients in the pot, close the lid, and when the time is right, remove the ingredients. Add your favorite seasonings and enjoy a special flavor packed with umami. Jigoku steaming experiences are also offered at accommodations such as Jigoku Mushi Kobo Kannawa, Nisano Yuyado Asahiya, and Morihan Bettei, as well as at hot spring resorts (rental rooms).

"Hell Steamed Pudding" is also popular. You can get it at "Okadaya" in Myoban Onsen.

Experience the traditional Japanese steam bath, a little different from a sauna

Traditional Japanese "steam bath"

At Kannawa Onsen, you can also experience the ancient Japanese "steam bath." The bathing style differs from a regular sauna, as you lie down on medicinal herbs spread across a stone chamber heated by steam. These herbs are called Sekisho, and are said to be effective against sensitivity to cold and for beautiful skin by providing a gentle warmth.

Bamboo crafts have a long history

Beppu city is also known for its traditional craft culture. Beppu bamboo crafts have a long history dating back to the 1st century and were designated a national traditional craft in 1979. Bamboo crafts are used for rice baskets for steamed dishes and lunch boxes, as well as fashion items such as bags and bamboo accessories. They are sold in various spots, such as the Beppu City Bamboo Crafts Traditional Industry Center and inside Beppu Station, so be sure to pick up your favorite bamboo craft item while walking around the city!
