A classic drive on the Yamanami Highway

Yamanami Highway

Yamanami Highway

The Yamanami Highway (Prefectural Route 11) stretches for approximately 50km, connecting Mikumari Pass in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, and Ichinomiya Town in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Yufuin Onsen is practically the starting point for a fun drive. The majestic and panoramic views of the Kuju Mountain Range and Iida Plateau unfold before your window. The views from Makinoto Pass, the highest point, and the long-established drive-in, Asahidai Rest House, are spectacular. This is truly a classic highway. Along the way, you'll find ranches and leisure spots, as well as highland gourmet spots such as farm restaurants, pastry shops, and gelato specialty shops.

Yufuin Onsen

Yufuin Yunotsubo Highway

Yufuin Yunotsubo Highway

This is the collective name for the hot springs that gush forth around the Yufuin Basin. When the neighboring Yunohira Onsen is included, the name is sometimes written as "Yufuin Onsen." The hot spring town spreads out at the foot of Mount Yufuin and boasts over 860 hot springs, the second-highest number in Japan. The main street, Yunotsubo Kaido, is lined with souvenir shops, general merchandise stores, galleries, sophisticated restaurants and cafes, making it a great place to spend your time strolling around town, enjoying gourmet food and shopping. Tourist carriages, rickshaws, Scarboroughs (a circular bus converted from a British classic car), and rental bicycles are also available. A popular photo spot is Lake Kinrin, a rare lake where warm and pure water gushes forth from part of its bed. With an average annual water temperature of 13-15°C, mist rises from the lake's surface in the early mornings of late autumn and winter when the outside temperature drops. Another draw of the town is the town's close encounter with art, with a gallery located within the station building. We are also looking forward to the Yufuin Film Festival in August, which will feature guests such as film directors and actors.
