Wakakusa no Yado Maruei: Relaxing with warm hospitality and people
A Japanese inn where people can feel at ease
Wakakusa no Yado Maruei, located on the shores of Lake Kawaguchi at the foot of Mount Fuji, celebrated its 70th anniversary as a ryokan inn in 2025.
The hotel is undergoing a gradual renovation in preparation for this milestone year, with the top floor open-air baths, "Fuji no Yu" and "Umi no Yu," and the private observation bath, "Fuyo no Yu," being completely renovated between 2022 and 2023. From "Fuji no Yu" and "Fuyo no Yu," guests can see the majestic Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, while from "Lake no Yu," they can see the sparkling blue of Lake Kawaguchiko.
The exterior will be renovated in 2024, with a soft and calming appearance that harmonizes with the natural beauty of Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi. In addition, the 200-tatami banquet hall will be transformed into a Japanese dining hall called "Fujizakura," showcasing traditional Japanese beauty.
Relaxing guest rooms surrounded by the warmth of wood
There are a total of 46 guest rooms that make use of the warmth of wood. There are a variety of room types available, including standard Japanese-style rooms facing Lake Kawaguchi, rooms with open-air baths, Japanese-Western rooms with panoramic baths that incorporate universal specifications, and the special, purely Japanese-style floor, "Nonohanatei."
For dinner, a Japanese kaiseki meal featuring carefully selected seasonal and local produce is served in your room or in a private dining room with a Japanese atmosphere. For breakfast, a Japanese meal is served at each table in the restaurant, with health-conscious guests in mind.
Above all, what Maruei values most is the "spirit of hospitality." The name "Maruei," which comes from the current president's great-grandfather, the first Eikichi, is said to contain the wish that "the inn will prosper and the lives of its guests will be filled with well-rounded prosperity."
"What we aim for is a Japanese inn where people (guests) can feel healed by other people (staff)," says President Watanabe Hiroshi. "My life's theme is to constantly seek out the meaning and role of a Japanese inn in today's extremely chaotic society, and by extension in the international community, to become an inn that is always growing like young grass, and that is filled with the charm and humanity of the foot of Mount Fuji, so that guests can return home with a smile and refreshed for the next day," says Watanabe.
