Take a historical stroll through the Hokumon Yashiki, a World Heritage Site
Explore history in a World Heritage town
Hokumon Yashiki is the only inn located within the Hagi Castle Town, a World Heritage Site. It is located within Hagi Castle, on the site of the Yoshiki Mori family residence, where the Mori clan, who once lived in the Hagi Castle Sannomaru area of Hagi Castle, were once the residences of the castle's senior vassals. Walking through the town layout, which has remained almost unchanged since the feudal era, and the samurai residences that still retain a strong resemblance to those days, you will feel as if you have traveled back in time to the Edo period.
The inn is also within walking distance of the high-class samurai residences surrounding it, as well as Hagi Castle Town and the castle ruins, making it easy to explore, and many guests stay here for that purpose. For that reason, in addition to the usual customer service, the inn also offers a wealth of tourist information, including historical guides, such as original hand-drawn walking maps. In the castle town, we recommend touring the sites associated with Takasugi Shinsaku, a patriot of the late Edo period, and retracing his footsteps at the Hagi Museum. 2025 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Mori Terumoto. Along with sightseeing in Hagi, a visit to the Mori Museum in Hofu City would make a great drive.
Walk through a garden where Japanese and Western beauty are in harmony
We also recommend taking a stroll around the building. Guest rooms offer views of the tranquil Japanese garden, and the Hokumon Garden, an English-style garden where Japanese and Western flowers and trees blend together, allows you to enjoy the changing seasons. The building also has a library with a collection of books related to the history of Hagi, where you can enjoy reading in a calm space. The entire building is a spot that will make your journey through history even more enjoyable.
