The "5-Star Ryokans" designation is awarded to inns that have been selected five or more times (in years) in the "Top 250 Popular Hot Spring Inns and Hotels," which is chosen annually by travel professionals, including employees of travel agencies, based on popular votes from travelers.

The 2026-2027 edition, themed "Traveling to discover things you didn't know, didn't notice, and never saw before," introduces five-star accommodations across Japan, along with tourist facilities and events in hot spring resorts and their surrounding areas, as well as festivals held in hot spring areas throughout the country. In addition, it also includes the "Top 100 Hot Springs in Japan" ranking, which is announced in conjunction with the "Top 250 Popular Hot Spring Ryokans and Hotels."
