This long-established inn conveys the history of its hot springs, which were highly praised by Jippensha Ikku and the haiku poet Issa.
You can refresh your body and mind by moving between the retro bathhouse and the modern space.
Kusatsu Boun is a long-established hot spring inn that was founded in 1599, the year before the Battle of Sekigahara.
It must have been a key player in the prosperity of Kusatsu during the Edo period. Jippensha Ikku wrote about the inn's prosperity in "Joushu Kusatsu Onsen Onsen Dochu," and the haiku poet Issa, who was an old acquaintance of the seventh owner, wrote about the splendor of the hot springs, saying, "The face of the moon unstained by the steam." The inn has six free-flowing baths, each with water drawn from two hot springs.
Both bathhouses have a wonderful atmosphere. At Nishi-no-Yu, which is fed by the Sainokawara hot spring, you will be captivated by the gazebo-style open-air bath and the beautiful wooden-framed indoor bath.
The Bandai Onsen bath, overlooking the gardens that change with the seasons, is also a delight. In late May, 3,000 rhododendrons bloom in a lovely rose pink hue. The highly acidic Kusatsu Onsen, with its strong antibacterial properties.
The best place to see the difference between the two hot springs is the elegant "Yusan no Yu." The Nishinokawahara hot spring and the Bandaiko hot spring flow into the baths next to each other. A new sauna has also been installed on the premises, allowing you to relax and rejuvenate your body and mind.
All baths are alternated between men and women. You can enjoy the hot springs to your heart's content while enjoying the natural hot spring water in all baths. How about composing a haiku, following the example of Issa?
The charm is the room
The inn itself is a stark contrast to the bathhouse, with a modern look. The space is made of modern wooden architecture with beautiful timber framework, and the gallery-like decorations, reminiscent of floral art, and the flowers and wildflowers displayed throughout the space are captivating.
The most popular room is the "Unshoan" room with an open-air bath. It is equipped with a Japanese-style room, an adjoining room, a shower room, and a wooden terrace with a view of the garden. The open-air bath that leads to the garden is filled with water from the Sainokawara hot spring.
In January 2025, eight Japanese-Western style rooms with indoor baths with natural hot spring water will be available on the fourth floor of the main building. The comfortable space is over 83㎡ and includes a Western-style twin room with a semi-double bed, a living room, and an eight-tatami Japanese-style room. You can enjoy the hot spring water in luxury without being disturbed by anyone.
Dinner can be served in your room or in a stylish private dining room, where you can enjoy a kaiseki meal prepared with the chef's heart and soul using local ingredients and seasonal flavors. Hot and cold dishes are served in sequence. This attention to detail is something you can only expect from a long-established inn.
The facility also offers full body care and foot reflexology massages, allowing you to enjoy a blissful moment after your evening bath.
The inn is filled with feminine kindness. The entrance and the steps in the hallways have been renovated, and now welcome guests with a beautiful appearance.
"Unrei" is a private dining restaurant with a woody aroma. Private rooms are available for your privacy.
